The prison services capture one of their own for alleged smuggling of drugs and mobile phones

An official at St Albans Middle B Correctional Center was caught trying to smuggle into the facility on Friday, the department of correctional services in the Eastern Cape said.

It said in a statement that the alleged incident occurred on Friday morning during a routine search of the center’s entrance. National Task Force (NTT) security officers were conducting a routine search for people at the access control gate when they noticed the vehicle.

The official walked to the door, but then turned the car around and drove away when he noticed searches were taking place, the department said.

NTT officers were instructed to pursue the vehicle and escort it back to access control.

The drugs and items seized included 120 Mandrax tablets, various starter packs for mobile phones, mobile phones, headsets, mobile phone chargers and USB cables. A case was opened at SAPS Kabega Park.

The official was subsequently arrested on Friday and is currently in police custody. You must appear in court on Monday.
