Second wave COVID-19 peaks are still a long way off in Gauteng, KZN – NICD

By looking at daily infection rates, scientists believe there is some preliminary evidence to suggest that the peak may have passed in the Eastern Cape and could be very close in the neighboring Western Cape.

JOHANNESBURG – The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said the peaks of the second wave were still far away in two of the country’s most populous provinces.

By looking at daily infection rates, scientists believe there is some preliminary evidence to suggest that the peak may have passed in the Eastern Cape and could be very close in the neighboring Western Cape.

But the numbers in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal continue to rise rapidly.

Professor Adrian Puren of the NICD said that daily numbers confirmed positive cases after testing, but that the true extent of the virus’s penetration could be much greater.

“Testing approaches may well vary within provinces, and capabilities and capabilities can affect that number of tests as well. Asymptomatic spread would certainly add a substantial proportion to those numbers.”
