The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has released the new guidelines for the sector under the latest adjusted lockdown level 3. The guidelines detail what gyms, fitness centers and other sports facilities must have to continue operating.

The latest set of regulations follows general guidelines set out by Cogta Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma last week, which includes mandatory wearing of masks and limits on the number of people venues can host.

However, they also include details for gyms and fitness centers, which may remain unlocked.

This is unlike sports fields and fields, which are closed to the public for the two-week period ending January 15, 2021, as well as all beaches, dams, lakes, rivers, and associated recreational facilities at these locations. in critical areas of the country.

According to the department, all beaches that are not closed to the public, as well as fitness centers, gyms, cinemas, theaters and museums must control access and keep disinfectant products available, while people visiting these areas must wear masks. .


Gyms and fitness centers

  • Gyms and equipment must be clean at all times to prevent the spread of the virus;
  • Cleaning staff must be active during all hours of operation;
  • All equipment, including floor mats, should be washed after each use;
  • People entering a gym or fitness center must wear a mask: entry is not allowed;
  • Masks can be removed for vigorous exercise, but a distance of two meters must be maintained at all times;
  • Vigorous training teams must be separated by a minimum of two meters;
  • Medium and low intensity workouts should be done with a minimum distance of 1.5 meters at all times;
  • Study classes are limited to a maximum of one place while maintaining a distance of two meters between participants;
  • All spaces for social distancing must be clearly marked;
  • There should be a 30 minute window between sessions to allow for cleansing;
  • Places should open windows during hours of operation to allow ventilation, or where a ventilation system is used, make sure filters are regularly maintained and replaced;
  • Saunas and steam rooms should be closed.

For exercise performed outdoors, previous regulations have already stated that masks should be worn in public places, unless vigorous exercise is performed.

The same regulation of two meters of distance between people is applied in these spaces.

  • All fields and sports grounds are closed to the public;
  • Only sports activities, including professional sports, organized by recognized sports bodies can be carried out;
  • Spectators are not allowed to attend these events;
  • The only people allowed are: journalists, medical personnel, site personnel, security personnel and team support personnel;
  • Only the necessary or essential contingents of these permitted persons may be present.

In accordance with national regulations, the following is also in force:

  • You cannot sell or consume alcohol;
  • All sports and fitness activities must be outside the curfew hours from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and venues close at 8:00 PM;
  • The regulations, guidelines and capacity of the places must be clearly indicated;
  • Any food facility on site must comply with the regulations established by the responsible department.
