Retailer Pick n Pay will now offer a mobile service, PnP mobile, that will reward its loyal Smart Shopper base with free data determined by in-store spending.
Relying on MTN’s mobile network infrastructure, Pick n Pay will offer SIM-based prepaid services. Customers will be able to register SIM cards through the supermarket’s RICA paperless system, which is expected to be rolled out in 500 stores nationwide by the end of 2020. Smart shoppers will need to link their loyalty cards to their SIM cards to get data rewards. , and the SIM card must be recharged with at least R50 over a period of 30 days.
Smart shoppers will receive free data according to a monthly tier system ranging from lowest tier 1 to highest tier 4. Is that how it works:
- Tier 1 applies to smart shoppers who spend between R50 and R99 on PnP Mobile services and R500 on in-store purchases within a 30-day period. These buyers will be instantly rewarded with 250MB of free data.
- Tier 2 applies to savvy shoppers who spend between R100 to R199 on PnP Mobile services and R1,000 on in-store purchases within a 30-day period. PnP Mobile SIM cards from these buyers will receive 500MB of free data.
- Tier 3 applies to savvy shoppers who spend between R200 and R299 on PnP Mobile services and R2,500 on in-store purchases within a 30-day period. These buyers will get 1.25GB instant data rewards.
- Tier 4 applies to savvy shoppers who spend more than R300 on PnP Mobile services and R5,000 on in-store purchases within a 30-day period. These buyers will get the maximum amount of free data of 2.5 GB.
“This is an outstanding innovation for our customers and we are very excited about the additional benefits they will gain,” says Richard van Rensburg, Pick n Pay’s director of technology and services. “Innovation has been absolutely critical to creating South Africa’s favorite loyalty program and this new Smart Shopper innovation means customers leave our stores with affordable groceries, points on their card and now free data on their PnP Mobile SIM card. ”.
While PnP Mobile is geared towards serving existing smart shoppers, the service includes competitive voice and SMS rates for all users, whether they are part of the loyalty program or not. Voice or airtime rates are priced at R1.49 per minute on all networks. SMS are charged at 60 cents per message.
However, data for non-smart shoppers is expensive at 20 cents per MB, which is more expensive than almost all other mobile service providers on the market.
