The new BMW 128ti has been fully revealed, arriving as a front-wheel drive hot hatch to rival the Volkswagen Golf GTI. BMW Group South Africa says it will be introduced locally in the first quarter of 2021.

The Munich-based company, which ranks in the Series 1 line under the all-legged M135i xDrive, regards the newcomer as a “filterless driving machine.” This “ti” insignia, for its part, dates from 1963 and means “International Tourism”.

Like the M135i, the 128ti employs BMW’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, although here it has been detuned from 225 kW to some. 195 kW, offered from 4,750 to 6,500 r / min. Maximum torque 400 NmMeanwhile, it is available from 1 750 to 4 500 r / min.

It is equipped as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with paddle shifters.

The German firm says the 128ti features “specific amplification of authentic engine sound” in the cabin. It also gains “specially tuned” M Sport suspension (with a 10mm drop in ride height) and a Torsen limited-slip differential.

Although not classified in the M Performance range, the new 128ti comes standard with two-tone 553 M light alloy wheels with 18-inch Y-spoke and is based on the M Sport specification, but with special red exterior accents and glossy black elements. .

Inside, you’ll find even more red trim, including on the standard Sensatec / cloth sport seat backs. Meanwhile, red “ti” letters are stitched onto the center armrest while contrasting red stitching abounds.

The standard equipment list includes M pedals with stainless steel caps, M door sill trims at the front, and M seat belts, while sport seats are available as an option in perforated Dakota leather (in black with black accents in blue or red with gray details). In addition, M sports seats with integral head restraints and extendable seating surfaces are optionally available.

Stopping power is provided by standard M sport brakes, with calipers bearing the M logo on the front axle and painted red. Four-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers with 360 x 30 mm internally ventilated discs are used at the front, while floating calipers with 300 x 20 mm internally ventilated brake discs are found at the rear.
