JOHANNESBURG – Those looking for a spicier take on Audi’s sleek new A7 Sportback can now opt for an S7 model. Priced at R1,500,500, the S7 Sportback shares its mechanical parts with the latest S6 sedan, although the new fastback model is priced higher than R100,000 for its distinctive body style.

While European customers can opt for a 3.0 TDI turbodiesel version of the S7, with 257kW and 700Nm, Audi SA has opted for the petrol version of the S7. This comes with the familiar 2.9-liter V6 biturbo unit, found in the RS 5, producing a hearty 331kW from 5700 to 6700 rpm and 600 Nm at 1900 revs. That’s enough, says Audi, to propel it from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds, while top speed remains electronically regulated at 250 km / h.

To increase efficiency, the motor is paired with a 48V mild hybrid system, which can recover up to 8 kW of power during deceleration. However, the fuel economy is marginal, 0.4 liters per 100 km.

Power is delivered to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a quattro all-wheel drive system with an auto-locking center differential that, under normal driving conditions, delivers 60 percent of torque to the rear axle. However, if necessary, you can send up to 70 percent to the front or up to 85 percent to the rear.

Audi’s S Sport suspension with adaptive damping is standard on the S7, but buyers will have to pay more for air suspension and all-wheel steering.

What kit do you get?

On the outside, the S7 can be distinguished by its bolder bumpers, as well as aggressive side steps, 21-inch alloy wheels, platinum S grille, and quad tailpipes.

Inside you will find S sports seats with integrated head restraints, as well as raised S logos and a diamond pattern. While sports seats are standard, however, buyers can also opt for multiple adjustable contour seats with ventilation and massage functions. Also distinguishing the S7 is a unique graphic design for the Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, as well as a flat-bottomed steering wheel and stainless steel pedal caps.

Standard equipment includes MMI Navigation Plus with haptic feedback, Bang and Olufsen premium sound system, four-zone climate control, panoramic roof, and a 30-color contour ambient lighting system.

As mentioned, the Audi S7 Sportback is priced at R1 500 500, which includes a five-year / 100,000 km Audi Freeway Plan.
