CAPE TOWN – There is some hope for the residents of the fire-ravaged Masiphumelele, with the national government approving emergency funding for shelter kits.
More than a week ago, more than 1,000 structures were destroyed in a fire and around 6,000 people lost everything in the fire.
Malusi Booi, a member of Mayco Human Settlements, said that 35 million rand had been approved for starter kits.
“Some will go to the wetlands, some will build services on the ground and make sure that we prepare for the upper structures, so all the processes are already underway and we are also waiting for some planning approval so that we can start our work. .. “
He said that now that the money had been approved, materials could be purchased.
Booi said they expected to have residents in their new temporary homes located at a nearby sports field by January 15.
The long-term plan is to build permanent houses for the residents, but they will not be completed before April next year.
