The medic aboard the crashed Netcare helicopter was on his way to help Jackson Mthembu

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told eNCA that the doctor had canceled everything and made himself available to treat Minister Jackson Mthembu.

JOHANNESBURG – It was learned that one of the medical specialists aboard a Netcare helicopter that crashed in KwaZulu-Natal was heading to Johannesburg to try to save the life of Jackson Mthembu, member of the African National Congress (ANC) and Minister of the Presidency.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told eNCA that the doctor had canceled everything and made himself available to treat Mthembu.

The helicopter went down near Bergville on Thursday, killing four health workers and the pilot.

The Netcare Group expressed its condolences to the families of those who died in the tragedy.

Minister Mthembu also passed away on Thursday at the age of 62, after contracting COVID-19.

He was at the forefront in communicating government messages aimed at fighting the virus.

His passing leaves President Cyril Ramaphosa without a key member of his cabinet, as well as a staunch ally, who dedicated his efforts to healing the gaps in the ANC and restoring public trust in the party he served since his days as a young activist.
