Johannesburg – Suspect non-ferrous metals that were scheduled to be transported and recycled at a steel and fabrication company in Alrode in Alberton have led to the arrest of two men for items valued at R25 million.

Plant and operations managers of the Alberton steel and manufacturing company appeared in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court today for the alleged possession of infrastructure material, which included oversized bridges, contact cables, overhead cables, railroad tracks and springs, Transnet identified as its property.

The 45- and 28-year-old duo were charged with violating the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015 and Second-hand Property Act 6 of 2009.

” An operation driven by a multidisciplinary approach by the Hawks Organized Felony Investigation, Provincial Criminal Intelligence, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Department, with the support of Transnet, resulted in a swift arrest of the plant and operations managers of a steel company and manufacturing in Alberton for possession of infrastructure equipment, ”the Hawks said in a statement Friday.

The investigation team tracked intelligence on suspicious non-ferrous metals scheduled to be transported and recycled at a steel and fabrication company at Alrode in Alberton yesterday.

” Upon arrival, a search and seizure warrant was executed and, among other seized items that Transnet positively identified as its own, include oversized bridges, contact cables, overhead cables, railroad tracks and springs with an estimated value of R25 million. The two men were immediately arrested. ”
