We all think we know what a Jose Mourinho team is like.

The Portuguese has developed a reputation as one of the game’s best coaches in the 21st century, bringing his talents to Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea again, Manchester United and now Tottenham.

Things may not have worked out the way he wanted at some of those clubs, but there is little doubt about his place in modern football history and his influence on many great players.

But which players has Mourinho relied on most often in his different managerial spells?

While we’ve been looking at the most frequent multi-star teammates for the past few days, we will now examine the players the Portuguese chose most frequently.

Mourinho has managed some great players over the years.

  • The XI is made up of players who made the most appearances alongside our featured player or our featured manager. We are not looking for a ‘Best’ XI overall, and the player / manager is not on it.
  • For a player, the appearance numbers are based on the time they spent on the field at the same time as our main man, taking into account both club and international level.
  • These are not necessarily the eleven players who spent most of their time on the field with him, but the eleven who would fit into a team.
  • We are not going to make it to a Garth Crooksesque formation, but we could name submarines if we wanted to.

Here is the last XI of Mourinho.

Goalkeeper: Petr Cech

Appearances under Mourinho: 195

Cech played in Chelsea’s goal for 11 years

The Czech had already been signed by Chelsea when Mourinho arrived in 2004, and will become a crucial last line of defense for him in both of his spells.

Right back: Paulo Ferreira

Appearances under Mourinho: 206

The Portuguese was a winner of the Champions League under Mourinho in Porto

A reliable right back and clearly a player that Mourinho admired, the Portuguese was brought to Chelsea by his compatriot and ended up staying there for nine years, picking up the Champions League in 2012.

Central defender: Ricardo Carvalho

Appearances under Mourinho: 280

Carvalho had three spells under Mourinho

No player has played more games under Mourinho’s administration than the central defender, who starred in his Portuguese teammates in Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Center Back: John Terry

Appearances under Mourinho: 266

Terry was a natural leader for Mourinho’s Chelsea

He was already at Stamford Bridge when Mourinho got there, but the manger could hardly have wished for a better rock for building things than Terry, who was a faithful servant to his boss.

Left: Marcelo.

Appearances under Mourinho: 113

The Brazilian played for Mourinho at Real Madrid

You have to go quite far on Mourinho’s list to find a left back, but Marcelo was a constant presence in his Real Madrid team for three seasons, winning the League in 2012.

Defensive midfielder: Nemanja Matic

Appearances under Mourinho: 159

The Serbian has been signed by Mourinho twice

A dominating midfield presence on Moutinho’s Chelsea team that won the 2014/15 title, the Serb also joined him at Manchester United.

Central midfield: Xabi Alonso

Appearances under Mourinho: 151

Alonso was at Real Madrid during Mourinho’s three seasons

Alonso had been a Real Madrid player for a year before Mourinho took office, as his boss had joined since Liverpool in 2009, and went on to play a starring role in each of his three seasons at the Bernabéu.

Central midfield: Frank Lampard

Appearances under Mourinho: 215

Lampard was a regular goalscorer from midfield

One of Mourinho’s most trusted players, Lampard’s goals from midfield were crucial to Chelsea’s success in the mid-2000s.

Attacking midfielder: Mesut Ozil

Appearances under Mourinho: 157

Ozil’s three years at Real Madrid were all under Mourinho

Arguably Ozil’s most consistent football occurred during his time under Mourinho at Real Madrid, when he was a regular player and a key factor in the 2011/12 League victory.

Drogba enjoyed two spells under Mourinho

Mourinho’s most trusted forward player, Drogba led the line during the coach’s first spell at Chelsea and also returned for a year as the 2014/15 Premier League was picked up.

Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo

Appearances under Mourinho: 164

The two Portuguese icons were together at Real Madrid for three years.

If you have Cristiano Ronaldo, then of course you will use him, and that is what Mourinho did during each of his three years at the Bernabéu, as he helped him to the 2013 Ballon d’Or.
