JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi claims that the Independent Examining Board (IEB) is being subsidized by the poor, without paying for Umalusi’s services.

He has asked the IEB to withdraw his court case against the quality assurance body.

The IEB is understood to have approached the courts arguing that it could not pay for the evaluation services offered by Umalusi.

Lesufi said he was surprised by the IEB’s attempts to force the poor to bear their financial burden.

The MEC said the independent schools body must find other ways to finance its activities or they must cease to exist.

“The IEB must withdraw its court case. This case shows that they have been receiving gifts for quite some time, that the poor have been subsidizing their activities. We are also alarmed by the failure of the IEB to publicly disclose its financial records and its business operation, ”said Lesufi.

The IEB has dismissed the MEC’s claims.

In a statement, he said that the IEB did not expect, and had never expected, that anyone other than the IEB would pay for its services.

He moved to clarify that his matter in court was related to the improper collection of fees by Umalusi since 2016.
