JOHANNESBURG – Did Shepherd and Mary Bushiri really flee to their home country of Malawi, thereby defying their conditions of bail? That’s what the Hawks are trying to figure out Saturday.
In a post on his social media pages, Shepherd Bushiri said that they left South Africa over security concerns and that despite their concerns about informing the police, there has been no protection from the state.
“There have been clear and obvious attempts to have me, my wife and my family killed, and despite our various attempts to inform the authorities, there has never been any state protection,” he said.
The Hawks said this violates their bail conditions set out in Pretoria Magistrates Court.
Earlier this month, the couple were released on bail of 200,000 rand, and the judge ruled that there was no risk of flight.
“At this stage, we can confirm that he did not show up at the police station as requested and agreed to, which is also an act of violation of a court order,” the Hawks said.
“Investigators along with prosecutors have been working tirelessly since it came to light that he did not show up at the police station.
An investigation is under way into the breach of the court order.
