JOHANNESBURG – The government on Monday urged the public to believe it did not help the self-proclaimed prophet, Shepherd Bushiri, and his wife flee the country.
“I think we would like to urge South Africans to believe us. Once we can extradite the Bushiris, we can share with the South Africans what he tells us because he owes the South Africans an explanation. There were no mischief, “said government spokeswoman Phumla Williams.

Minister Naledi Pandor dismissed the accusations on Sunday.
“Minister Pandor believes that these matters should be the subject of a full and proper investigation by the responsible authorities rather than speculation bordering on irresponsible journalism,” Dirco spokesman Clayson Monyela said in a statement.
He added: “Dirco officials work diligently and have the right to do so without having their reputation tarnished by anonymous sources hiding in the shadows.”
The Bushiri fled South Africa more than a week ago after being released on bail. They are accused of fraud, theft and money laundering involving R102 million.
