Paul Merson has suggested that Arsenal may regret having fired Mesut Ozil from their squad after he was completely shut out of the Premier League and Europa League.
The German has not played for the club since March, but was a key member of the team when Mikel Arteta was first appointed as the club’s manager.
He played at least ten games for them between December and March, yet he hasn’t been named by the club in any of their registered teams for this season – well, until January at least.
Merson acknowledges that the former Real Madrid player is a great talent and keeping him out of the team when he could help them in the future was a great gamble.
He admitted he was one of the German’s fans and stated that he was surprised to learn that he will be left out of Arsenal’s registered teams for the season.
“He is an absolute talent. So keeping him out of the team, completely out of the team, is a big bet from Arsenal, ”Merson told Sky Sports. “He has massive salaries, no doubt. Make fortunes. I’m surprised, I was surprised When they told me that they had left him out of the team, I was surprised, to be honest, because I am one of their biggest fans. “
Merson is often ridiculed for some of his opinions, especially when it comes to Arsenal, however I am sure there will be some football fans who will agree with his assessment of Ozil.
