JOHANNESBURG – Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said formalization of the taxi industry would be at the top of the agenda in the next taxi lekgotla.

Mbalula announced that a national lekgotla would be held on October 29.

The department released discussion papers detailing the conversations the government has had with the taxi industry.

The minister said there needs to be a strong conversation about the leadership struggles that caused violence in the industry.

This lekgotla comes as Gauteng province has an ongoing investigation into taxi violence.

Unity in the industry remains a challenge as violence and conflict fueled by turf wars and leadership disputes continue unabated. The associations remain unregulated and the operators are not responsible for their conduct through effective law enforcement, ”said Mbalula.
