Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vice President David Mabuza, who chairs the Interministerial Committee on Vaccines, received South Africa’s first shipment of the Covid-19 vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (SII) at Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg today.

IBS has obtained a license to produce a vaccine that has been developed by the multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical AstraZeneca, in collaboration with the University of Oxford.

The goal of the vaccination program is to achieve immunity in the entire population. The arrival of the first shipment will lead to the deployment of the vaccination program.

The first phase of the vaccination program will prioritize around 1.2 million front-line health workers.

The committee chaired by Mabuza focuses on procurement, distribution, actual vaccination, monitoring, communication and mobilization.

Ramaphosa and Mabuza were joined by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, Acting Minister of the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the High Commissioner of the Republic of India, His Excellency Jaideep Sarkar and Dr. Morena Makhoana, Executive Director of Biovac.
