JOHANNESBURG – Axed Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku said that he had instructed his lawyers to begin the application process to review and set aside the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) findings that led to him his removal from the main post on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Gauteng Prime Minister David Makhura announced that he had relieved Masuku of his duties after the SIU found that he did not comply with the Constitution and regulations contained in the Public Finance Management Act during the COVID-19 acquisition processes.

Masuku said it was “extremely unfair” that some media outlets, the SIU and others had been selling what he described as “falsehoods”, suggesting that he did not exercise oversight during the acquisition of the COVID-19 personal protective equipment.

Relying on the fact that he ordered the department head to request an investigation on April 17, before all other provinces, Masuku distanced himself from any form of irregularity.

In the forensic report commissioned by Masuku and released Thursday, investigators absolved him of any blame in the irregular bidding processes in the province, saying there was no evidence to point to any wrongdoing on his part.

However, while Masuku is fighting his involvement in the cute irregularities, Makhura has given him a reprieve, saying that if the SIU’s final report clears his name, he would rehire him.

In the statement released this afternoon, Masuku listed his accomplishments since taking over the portfolio, adding that his team found the department languishing in shame and anguish after the Life Esidimeni tragedy and the Banco de Lisboa fire, that killed three firefighters.
