Cape Town – The number of new cases related to Covid-19 rose from 6,709 yesterday to 8,166, and Health Minister Zweli Mkhize expressed concern about the exponential increase in recent days.

Today, we wish to reiterate our call to South Africans to heed the threat of the growing number of identified Covid-19 cases. There is clear evidence of an exponential increase in transmission and this is of great concern, ”Mkhize said in a statement.

South Africa intends to speed up regulatory approval for Covid-19 vaccines and expects the first applications within fifteen days, pharmaceutical regulator SAHPRA told Reuters, as the country faces a second wave of infections.

South Africa is the most affected country on the continent with more than 828,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 22,000 deaths.

The government expects to receive its first vaccines from the COVAX global vaccine distribution scheme in the second quarter of next year.

“SAHPRA will prioritize all Covid-19 applications and take an accelerated approach to medical devices, including vaccines,” said Yuven Gounden, spokesperson for the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority.

The accelerated method will include a “continuous review approach” in which evaluation of the candidate vaccine is done as data becomes available, he added.

The regulator will build on guidance from the World Health Organization and work done by international counterparts, such as European and US pharmaceutical regulators, to avoid repeating work already done that could delay approvals.

“We expect the first applications of the vaccine in the next week or two,” Gounden said.

Speaking at an event at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng on Thursday, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng was caught on video praying that vaccines are “from the devil” and corrupt people’s DNA.

In what his office confirmed as a sentence, the nearly two-minute video, which is circulating widely on social media, has Judge Mogoeng beginning by saying, “Whatever phase is said to come, Sir, I judge, I analyze it. ” in the name of Jesus. I block all the demons of Covid-19.

“I block any vaccine that is not yours. If there is any vaccine that is from the devil, intended to infuse triple six into people’s lives, intended to corrupt their DNA … Any one of those vaccines, Lord God Almighty, let it be destroyed by fire in the name of Jesus. . “
