Cape Town – Cape Town police were reeling when notified of the decomposing body of a child found in Hout Bay.
In a statement, provincial police spokeswoman Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the body was discovered by a member of the community.
“Hout Bay police are investigating identity, gender and cause of death following the discovery of a child’s body in a rocky and sandy area of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay on Tuesday afternoon,” Potelwa said.
He said that due to the excessive state of decomposition of the body, the age, gender and identity of the child could not be determined immediately and an autopsy would be carried out to find out the cause of death.
DNA tests will also be conducted to establish whether the body could be that of three-year-old Anonthando Mhlobo who disappeared in the area in August.
The boy was last seen playing with other children outside his home when he mysteriously disappeared. He was last seen in a red and white jacket with red and navy sweatpants.
Community members were shocked by the discovery.
“As if this year had not been enough, a corpse child. We can’t believe it, ”Sironne Abrahams said, adding that tensions were high within the community.
“It is almost Christmas time and when we find out who the child is, it will only bring more pain to the family. As a community, our main objective is to protect our children, it seems that we have failed this little one ”.
