Durban – The Zulu monarch mourns the death of his eldest son, Prince Lethukuthula Zulu, who was found dead at his Gauteng home in Northwold, Johannesburg, on Friday afternoon.
Prince Lethukuthula, 50, was the eldest son of King Goodwill Zwelithini and Queen Sibongile MaDlamini of the Royal Palace of KwaKhethomthandayo.
Police confirmed that Zulu was with a friend who was sleeping in another room at the Graceland residential complex when a security guard discovered her body.
However, this could not be confirmed by the police or independently verified.
Gauteng police spokesman Brig. Mathapelo Peters said the information was still incomplete and that the police were investigating the circumstances leading to his death. He said an investigation file had been opened at Honeydew SAPS.
“An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. At this time, the police are not free to reveal the exact cause of death or confirm the identity of the deceased, ”Peters said.
Zulu royal household spokesman Prince Thulani Zulu said he had no details about the prince’s death. He said he was driving from Durban to the royal house in Nongoma.
Prince Mbonisi Zulu said he had no idea what had happened, but would give details after the police post-mortem report was obtained.
Prince Lethukuthula is believed to have been a businessman with operations in Gauteng.
His death was announced on behalf of the king by his prime minister, former interior minister and founder of the IFP, Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
“The Zulu Royal Family and the Zulu Nation mourn this sudden and unexpected loss,” Buthelezi said in a statement yesterday.
Buthelezi said funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
“For now, our condolences and support go out to Her Majesty and the Royal Family.”
IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa expressed his party’s condolences to the royal family. He said on behalf of the IFP: “We wish His Majesty strength as he calms the anguish of the Zulu Nation, and we pray that he himself will be comforted by the support that will no doubt come from many quarters as the late Prince Lethukuthula is honored and cried. We also express our condolences to our founder and President Emeritus, Deputy Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
“Prince Buthelezi was with the King and Queen until late at night when they received the news of their son’s passing. This is a painful time for the Zulu Nation. We support all who are grieving and we pray for the royal family. “
The death of the prince comes at a time when the king was still mourning the death of his half brother, Prince Mandla Zulu, who died in August, as well as the deaths of two princesses, Nobuhle and Busi (who lived in Mbelebeleni royal residence in KwaMashu, Durban). It was unclear what caused their deaths.
He is also mourning the death of his sister, Queen Noloyiso Sandile (princess born Nomusa Zulu), who was the regent queen to Monarch AmaRharhabe of Maxhob’ayakhawuleza Sandile in the Eastern Cape.
