JOHANNESBURG – Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Friday that the arrests made in connection with the ongoing truck attacks in the country are testimony to intensified efforts by the police to resolve the matter.

Cele revealed on Friday that 25 people had been arrested after a series of violent attacks on truck drivers and their vehicles this month.

The president has formed an inter-ministerial committee to investigate the riots.

Cele said that although five of the arrested suspects were released on bail, the ministry was realizing the seriousness of the matter.

“If you look at the last 24-48 hours, we have been aware of the situation.”

Earlier this week, two truckers were arrested at gunpoint on the N12 road before their vehicles caught fire.

That was before another driver was shot and killed in Alberton.

Industry workers say tensions between South African drivers and migrants are at the center of the violence.

The South African Human Rights Commission, which carried out an investigation into the unrest earlier this year, said the government urgently needed to address flaws in the country’s migration policies if it was to resolve the tensions.

Although an inter-ministerial team has now been formed to tackle the problem, it is still unclear why the government missed its own deadline to finalize a national labor migration policy by March next year.
