JOHANNESBURG – National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole said on Monday that the most recent arrest of a senior South African Police Service (SAPS) official for corruption showed there were no “untouchables” in the service.
National Police Deputy Human Resources Commissioner Bonang Mgwenya appeared in a Johannesburg court on Monday on charges of fraud, corruption, theft and money laundering.
Reacting to the court appearance, Sitole said it was disturbing to see the police having to arrest their own leaders due to alleged fraud and corruption.
She was arrested for her role in a nearly 200 million rand tender for emergency warning equipment.
Mgwenya, who is ranked as the second highest official in SAPS, received a bail of 20,000 rand. She is the thirteenth defendant in the bid fraud case.
Investigation Directorate spokesman Sindisiwe Twala said Mgwenya would join several other high-ranking police officers at the pier in November for allegedly defrauding the government out of more than 191 million rand.
“During the acquisition process, the accused SAPS completely ignored the competitive bidding process and committed SAPS to a financial exposure of R191 million in favor of [Vimpie] Manthatha’s company in exchange for the benefits they received from Manthatha, ”said Twala.
