Pick n Pay has debunked claims that its Klipfontein staff, Emalahleni, detained two robbers in a cold room overnight, resulting in the death of one of them.
A group of community members, including members of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) and the EFF, had descended on the store on Wednesday to demand that it explain the “incident”.
“The story is completely false,” said David North, the executive of the corporate affairs and strategy group at the retailer.
According to Pick n Pay, the two women were caught on closed-circuit television cameras, allegedly stealing a large quantity of cheese. They were detained for security.
“The police were called. The women were treated with respect, asked to remain in the store until the police arrived, and were taken to an office on the store’s top floor. This office is nowhere near any cold storage. This was also clearly captured on video, ”the retailer said.
“When the police arrived later that night, they escorted the two women out of the store. Both women were in the same good health as when they entered our store. Her departure from the store with the police is also captured on video footage.
“At no point did the two women complain to the store staff or to the police that they had been mistreated.”
