Durban – The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has again been ranked among the best universities in the world among the 400 best in the world at position 378 in the latest ranking of the best world universities (BGUR) of 2021 US News & World Report.

The annual rankings were released on Tuesday, UJ said in a statement Wednesday.

“At the national level, UJ held the fifth position among the 13 South African universities that were ranked, six of which were ranked among the top 500 in the world.

“The overall ranking of the best world universities includes the 1,500 most important universities in the world spread over 86 countries, compared to 81 countries last year.

“For these general global rankings, US News & World Report uses a methodology that focuses on factors that measure only research performance, based on 13 indicators that include those that measure the global and regional reputation of a university and the performance of academic research using bibliometric metrics such as citations, publications, and international research collaboration, ”said the university.

He said that in addition to the overall global rankings, the seventh BGUR also includes an examination of leaders in key academic areas with the publication of their corresponding subject rankings.

US News & World Report uses a separate methodology to publish top world universities in 38 subject areas, according to the UJ, with 10 new subject classifications introduced and published in this year’s edition of 2021, in addition to 28 classifications of subjects previously published in previous editions.

Subject-specific rankings, like general global rankings, are also purely based on academic research performance in those subjects.

“UJ has been classified in seven of these subject rankings in the 2021 edition of this year, above the six subjects in which UJ was placed last year, making its debut in the Environment / Ecology subject ranking, in position 463 worldwide.

Most notably, UJ ranks first in the country and on the continent in Chemistry, climbing a substantial 87 places in the world top 300 to 280 this year from 367 last year.

“Significantly, UJ ranks second in South Africa in geosciences (up from third last year) and engineering, at 222 (12 more than 234 last year) and 392 (entering the world top 400 this year, 12 places from 404 last year), respectively.
