The ANC has been forced to speak out about corruption for the past two weeks.
- A group of ANC MK veterans known as the MK council expressed dismay at the state of the organization, saying it was on a downward spiral.
- MK’s council says that while it supports Ramaphosa’s letter on corruption and calls on the parties involved to step aside, there has been little action on it.
- He also says he does not trust Tony Yegeni’s abilities as chairman of the peace and security subcommittee.
The MK council, made up of former generals and commissars of the ANC liberation army uMkhonto we Sizwe, warned that the ANC was now firmly on a downward spiral and sweeping the country with it.
The structure, which was launched in 2016 ahead of Nasrec’s elective conference, expressed support for the letter from the country’s president and party, Cyril Ramaphosa, calling the ANC the “number one defendant of corruption”; however, he denounced the lack of action in this regard.

Nthatisi called out people like MP Bongani Bongo and former Ethekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede, who was now in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, for remaining in their respective roles despite a NEC decision calling on those facing serious charges and corruption that they withdraw.

He also expressed disappointment at the NEC’s handling of the issue of Nelson Mandela Bay Councilor Andile Lungisa and the re-election of ANC Limpopo Treasurer Danny Msiza and Vice President Florence Radzilani.
Lungisa was found guilty of assault with the intent to cause serious bodily harm after throwing a jug at the head of council prosecutor Rano Kayser during a fight at the subway council in October 2016.

While the Limpopo couple had “stepped aside” after being implicated in widespread looting that led to the collapse of VBS Mutual Bank, they were reinstated after two years of inaction against them by law enforcement authorities.
“While the courts approved them, the Integrity Committee has not. As an institution charged with upholding the values of the ANC, we believe that priority should be given to reviewing their case before they are reinstated to their leadership positions,” said. Nthatisi.
The council also attacked the party’s heavyweight, Tony Yengeni, saying they did not believe he was in a position to lead the project to unite the warring MK factions or to continue as chairman of the party’s peace and stability subcommittee.

Yengeni last month suggested during a national working committee that Ramaphosa should consider resigning.
“Up to now, Comrade Tony Yengeni has proven incapable of leading that project or deliberately changing it due to his bias,” Nthatisi said.
They accused Yengeni of addressing meetings of a faction known as RET (Radical Economic Transformation), which had been supporting ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule and former President Jacob Zuma, while constantly attacking Ramaphosa and his efforts as the leader of the match.

Nthatisi said that Yengeni also did not act against MKMVA president Kebby Maphatsoe and the association which issued its own statements and held briefings with the media.
Shocked
Last month, the MKMVA called for the dissolution of the Ramaphosa NEC, calling it paralyzed.
Nthatisi said that the agreement in the project to unite the MK council and the MKMVA was that neither group in conflict could make public pronouncements outside of agreed protocols.

“We are perplexed and shocked by his kind of leadership. He should call it a betrayal of a cause that he himself had started,” Nthatisi said.
Former Commissioner MK said the council had formally communicated its concerns with Yengeni, saying she had been very strong while she was still part of the council seeking to rid the ANC of things that were wrong with the organization.
“The ANC is suffering and we must ensure that it does not fall into the stalemate of history,” Nthatisi said.
As they had done before, the former MK leaders said they could no longer back down.

Ike Moroe, another council member and former Magashule adviser, said that the ANC could not seek unity forever with people they did not want to see the old liberation movement united.
