The ANC “appears more and more like a party at war with itself.”
This was the frank message that ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered to the meeting of the party’s highest inter-conference decision-making body, the national executive committee, which took place virtually.
Ramaphosa was presenting his political outlook to set the tone for discussions for the NEC meeting that began Sunday and was due to end Tuesday.
Ramaphosa told the meeting that the ANC has so far failed to meet one of the goals it had set for itself in early 2020, which was “to build a united movement in action.”
Divisions within the ruling party were now “more pronounced at the leadership level.”
“The period after the 54th national conference was characterized by greater cohesion and unity of purpose within the organization, but now the divisions are increasingly evident and factions are emerging once again.
“These divisions are manifesting not only in our structures, but in public demonstrations of dissent and discord. In recent times we have witnessed statements and actions that are alien to the practices, culture and values of our movement.
“More and more we seem like an organization at war with itself. We need to ask ourselves if we are still committed to the mandate that the conference gave us to “unite and renew the movement,” Ramaphosa said.
