JOHANNESBURG – The ruling party in Zimbabwe said it had agreed with the African National Congress (ANC) that South Africa could not interfere in its internal affairs, saying the two countries were equal sovereign states.
The BBC is quoting Zanu-PF spokesman Patrick Chinamasa describing this week’s meeting as very frank and sincere, with both sides agreeing that there was no need to intervene in Zimbabwe’s internal affairs.
The ANC delegation, led by Secretary General Ace Magashule, was in Harare to speak amid reports of human rights violations in South Africa’s northern neighbor.
Zanu-PF said that the ANC had been led to believe that there was a crisis in Zimbabwe.
Party spokesman Patrick Chinamasa has insisted that no party will interfere in the internal affairs of the country.
The meeting comes weeks after alleged political tensions in Zimbabwe, with reports of human rights abuses against those who are critical of the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Journalists and social activists were arrested for organizing protests in Harare.
Meanwhile, the ANC trip has been mired in controversy after it emerged that the delegation used a SANDF aircraft to fly to Zimbabwe.
President Cyril Ramaphosa wants Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to explain.
Acting Presidential Spokesperson Tyrone Seale: “In the interests of good governance and the prudent and ethical use of state assets, the President has directed the Minister to submit a report within 48 hours that will set out the circumstances surrounding the flight. and the passenger list. The President appreciates the interest shown by South Africans in this matter as an indication of the nation’s vigilance against allegations of improper deployment of public resources. ”
Lindiwe Zulu, a member of the ANC NEC, who was part of the delegation, has said that the crisis in Zimbabwe was a case of national importance that justified the use of state resources.
