Several telcos, including Telkom, have taken industry regulator Icasa to court over the release and auction of high-frequency radio spectrum, claiming that the regulator’s process was flawed. High-frequency spectrum is crucial to opening economic opportunities in the telecommunications sector by allowing small players to enter, improving competition, and reducing the high cost of communications.
According to a SABC report, Telecommunications and Postal Services Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams visited the Free State, which is the first province to switch from analog to digital migration. Residents reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the technical problems that arose with the new digital migration.
The process, which was originally due to be completed in November 2011, was riddled with allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
SA reportedly missed several deadlines, including the international analogue transmission disconnection deadline of June 17, 2015.
