Grosjean’s competitive single-seater career began considerably later than that of his contemporaries. After winning a talent scholarship, he entered the Formula List championship in 2003, at age 17, where he became champion. This opened the doors to Formula Renault 1.6 and 2.0 for the next three years. But by then his father’s money had run out, and F3 as the next rung of the ladder was too far away.
He then approached Red Bull for support but was told they already had a Swiss driver in Sébastien Buemi. Grosjean also has French citizenship and, as an alternative, suggested its promotion by the energy drink giant in that country on that basis. But Red Bull sales were still banned in France at the time, which meant another was not.
