Apple’s iPhone 11 was the world’s best-selling smartphone in the first half of 2020, new data from Omdia, a global technology research firm, shows.
According to Omdia’s Smartphone Model Market Tracker – Q2’20 report, Apple shipped 37.7 million iPhone 11 units in the first half of this year, by far the most popular smartphone model.
Like the iPhone XR in 2019, the cheapest iPhone of 2019 ranked first in global shipments this year.
Despite the impact of Covid-19 in the first half of this year and movement restrictions imposed in several countries alongside it, and production disruptions, the iPhone 11 shipped 10.8 million more units than the iPhone XR. number 1 from last year.
A key factor in the success of the iPhone 11 is the lower starting price. The iPhone 11 launched $ 50 cheaper than the previous iPhone XR and added significant hardware improvements such as a dual-lens camera. The iPhone XR did not include such updates.
Apple dominates
The addition of the iPhone SE (2020) to Apple’s portfolio in April this year helped the company position four models on the list of the world’s 10 best. iPhone SE, a new budget iPhone, shipped 8.7 million units in the second quarter, good enough for fifth place in first-half shipment volume.
Growing consumer anxiety about the economic recession due to Covid-19 and consumer demand for a small-sized iPhone are key factors for the successful entry into the iPhone SE market.
iPhone 11 Pro Max and Pro, the premium models in the iPhone 11 series, ranked seventh and tenth, respectively.
Shipments of these two models decreased compared to the previous iPhone Xs Max and Xs, but their ranking improved.
According to Omdia’s smartphone market monitoring report, Apple shipped 13% more iPhones in the second quarter of this year compared to the previous year thanks to the success of the iPhone 11 and the recently launched iPhone SE.
The 10 best-selling smartphones in the first half
On the other hand, only one Samsung model made the top 10 this year. Like last year, a mid-range smartphone, the Galaxy A51, came in second with a total of 11.4 million units shipped. This is a significant change for Samsung, as this list included four Samsung models last year. No Samsung flagship device made the top 10.
Xiaomi has four top 10s this year, all from the Redmi line of devices. Xiaomi replaced Samsung’s mid-range and entry-level devices with its own models in the top 10 this year.
Xiaomi doubled the number of models in the top 10 of last year’s list. The Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro models ranked third and fourth, respectively.
The two models were priced at $ 132 and $ 162, respectively. Also, Xiaomi’s Redmi 8A and Redmi 8, which come in eighth and ninth place, were priced at $ 85 and $ 97, respectively.
The performance of lower-priced smartphone models is leveling off and consumer preference for lower-end models is growing due to the economic downturn, this makes Xiaomi smartphones popular in emerging markets.
Lastly, Huawei, a total leader in shipments in the second quarter of 2020, failed to make the top 10 list with any of its devices during the first half of this year.
Huawei’s smartphone business is under increasing pressure from US sanctions, which affects the company’s business abroad. Other OEMs not featured on this top ten list are OPPO and vivo.
