Teraco is building a second data center facility in Cape Town, the company announced.
Teraco Cape Town 2 (CT2) is a new 30MW data center facility, and follows the company’s recent announcement of a 60MW expansion of its Johannesburg data center campus in Isando.
Teraco, CEO Jan Hnizdo said that the investment in the facility is driven by the growth of cloud in the region, resulting in increased demand from cloud providers, companies and submarine cable operators.
“Proximity to the cloud, ecosystems and the consumer market is vital in the new digital architecture as companies move their applications to the cloud and transform their businesses,” said Hnizdo.
He added that with recent announcements of direct interconnect availability to Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute and AWS Direct Connect, Teraco has seen increasing acceptance by the business market.
“The Teraco platform enables companies to have direct private connections to all leading cloud providers in the most efficient, secure and latency resistant way possible,” he said.
“Businesses can deploy their public, private, and hybrid cloud strategies on Platform Teraco, allowing complete freedom of choice from the cloud provider’s perspective.”
Construction has begun
Teraco said construction of the site began in early March 2020 and will continue in line with local COVID-19 restrictions.
A specific end date was set for the third quarter of 2021.
“The entire facility will consist of eight data rooms spanning 8,000 square meters of usable space, doubling the capacity of the existing data center in the Cape Town region.”
“This new investment in the Mother City is special to us,” said Hnizdo, “when Teraco launched its first data center facility in Rondebosch, Cape Town, 11 years ago.”
NAPAfrica
The NAPAfrica Internet Exchange Point will also be deployed at the new CT2 facility, Teraco said.
“Teraco expects to see further growth and benefit for the company and content ecosystems in the region,” he said.
NAPAfrica is the largest Internet exchange in Africa and offers direct access to over 300 unique networks serving more than 20 countries in South Africa.
