Johannesburg – A 17-year-old Soweto mother is alleged to have kept quiet while her 30-year-old boyfriend raped and assaulted her 2-year-old daughter, who has since died.
The teen and her boyfriend were expected to appear in court Wednesday after being arrested and charged with the boy’s rape and murder.
A doctor, who was treating the child who had been quickly transferred by the mother, informed the police.
According to Gauteng Police spokesman Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, members of the Specialized Unit for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Crimes (FCS) were summoned to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital on November 16 by the child’s doctor.
The doctor told them that the girl had been brought in the night before because she had been assaulted and raped.
“An urgent forensic investigation was launched and all relevant forensic evidence was collected for processing by the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory.
“It was only on Tuesday, November 17, that the 17-year-old mother of the victim came to report the incident to the police. However, this helped the police obtain vital information to build a strong case to secure arrests. “
Peter said that during the preliminary investigation, the police were able to establish that on Sunday, November 15, the boy’s mother had left her in the care of her boyfriend for about two hours.
Upon her return around 8:30 pm, she said that the groom had left.
However, the groom’s father was at home and the boy was sleeping. He went to sleep because he did not want to disturb the boy.
“According to the complainant, she woke up in the middle of the night to see how the girl was doing and found the girl with serious injuries to her face. He took the boy to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital for medical attention.
“The result of the medical examination confirmed that the girl had been penetrated and that was when the doctor called the police.
“Unfortunately, the boy succumbed to the injuries and was certified dead on Thursday, November 19. The initial assault case with intent to cause serious bodily injury was later changed to murder.
“Investigations continue to await the outcome of the forensic analysis as the police seek to build an airtight case that can be brought to court and see justice done.
“The police have reason to believe that the deceased girl may have suffered previous abuse at the hands of her stepfather and this was not reported. This is the basis for the arrest of the teenage mother who in this case only reported the incident to the police two days later, ”Peters said.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Major General Patricia Rampota, welcomed the arrest and urged the investigation team to ensure that all bases are in place to achieve justice for the child.
“The SAPS remains committed to defending the rights of victims of gender violence, domestic violence, and femicide, and to prioritizing the investigation of all cases in which women, children and other vulnerable people are victims,” he said.
