A teenager disappeared into the waves while swimming at Ouskip in Melkbosstrand with family on Sunday.
Service personnel from the National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI) Melkbosstrand were activated following reports from Cape Town law enforcement officers on the scene.
“Three sea rescue vessels were launched to join the search and first responders were deployed to the surf line to carry out sweep line free diving search efforts,” NSRI said in a statement Sunday.
Despite an extensive air, sea and coastal search, there is currently no trace of the teenager.
A police diving unit has been tasked with continuing an ongoing search operation and will be assisted by services on duty in the area. “Our thoughts are with the family of the missing teenager at this difficult time,” NSRI said.
