Johannesburg – The Boitumelong community in the northwest has sunk into disbelief after a 16-year-old was charged with the murder of a 4-year-old girl.
The cause of the girl’s death is not yet known and, although there is no suspicion that she was raped, police are awaiting a post-mortem report that will reveal how the girl died.
Northwest police spokesman Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the boy was reported missing on Sunday.
She said she was last seen playing with other children outside of her parents’ backyard.
Later, she said, she was reported to have been seen in the company of a man along the N12 at night.
“The next day, around 10 am, the 16-year-old went to see his pastor and confessed that it was he who killed the girl.
“The pastor then took him to the police station and the officers, along with the teenager and the pastor, went to where he said the body was.
“The body was found in the bushes of Boitumelo,” he said.
It is not yet known what caused the teenager to approach the pastor and admit to the crime.
Mokgwabone said the two were not related, but lived in the same area. He said the fact that the teenager told the pastor that he had killed the boy was not a confession.
“It is an admission, not a formal confession.”
The teenager has been charged with murder and appeared before the Bloemhof Magistrates Court.
Mokgwabone said the teenager was placed in a safe place and would return to court on October 14.
Meanwhile, he was being prosecuted under the Children’s Justice Act, which included consultations with a social worker.
