In a presentation to parliament’s standing appropriations committee, the Treasury said the SABC “has indicated” a loss of revenue of 1.5 billion rand for the 2020/21 fiscal year as a result of the effect of the pandemic on revenue and income. travel costs for public service announcements. .

“The SABC has confirmed that it is requesting R1.5bn in support,” the Treasury said. He said SABC had said it would prioritize and accelerate revenue improvement initiatives, including restructuring its sales teams, introducing additional revenue lines, partnerships, and a move towards digital platforms for the distribution of its content.

The entity’s operations were significantly hurt by Covid-19 as it had to provide additional coverage of current events, causing its content lineup to shift and as a result, a loss in advertising revenue, said the Treasure. .

The SABC also indicated that it had collected less in television license fees than in the previous year.
