The largest data center in Africa is being planned for Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.

The R4 billion 16,000m building2 – known as JB4 – will house servers and other equipment.

Upon completion, the building will be three times the size of the continent’s current largest data center, the Riverfields hyperscale data center in Bredell, north of OR Tambo International Airport.

Both projects are owned by cloud computing provider Teraco.

Teraco has five other data centers in South Africa and provides cloud services for Amazon, Google and Microsoft’s Azure.

“The continued increase in cloud adoption in Africa is being made possible by investments in critical infrastructure, including hyperscale data center installations like JB4,” says Teraco CEO Jan Hnizdo. “This will allow global cloud customers to serve not only the South African market, but also reach the rest of the sub-Saharan African region.”
