Durban – Two suspects who allegedly stole a car at the airport Tuesday night were killed in an exchange of gunfire with police.

According to KZN police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele, officers from the Durban K9 Central Unit acted on intelligence on a vehicle that was stolen from the airport, traveling on the N2 motorway.

“The vehicle was seen traveling on the N2 heading south at the Bellair police compound.

“The police officers intercepted the vehicle but were greeted by a hail of bullets.

“During the exchange of gunfire, two suspects believed to be in their thirties were fatally wounded.

“An illegal firearm with four rounds of ammunition was found next to one of the suspects of the deceased.”

Mbele said the third suspect managed to escape and is still being searched by police.

“The stolen vehicle was also recovered.”

He said an investigation was opened at Bellair SAPS, which included attempted murder, possession of a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition and possession of a stolen vehicle.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula expressed his relief that the police officers escaped the shooting unarmed.
