A 47-year-old man was arrested after he was allegedly caught withdrawing cash from 70 Sassa cards at an ATM in Durban after he had driven there in an “exclusive Mercedes-Benz” he recently purchased.
The suspect, who cannot be identified until he appears in court, is expected to appear in Durban Magistrates Court on Monday, facing charges of fraud and possession of stolen property.
He was arrested Saturday at an ATM on Anton Lembede Street during an intelligence-driven operation by the Durban Central District Task Force, police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala said in a statement.
“Seventy Sassa cards were seized from the suspect and R7 640 cash was also recovered. His vehicle was also impounded by the police,” Gwala added.
“Further investigations by the team led them to the suspect’s residence in Umhlanga, where a USB stick was found after being thrown out the window. Police seized it for further investigation. The suspect was arrested for fraud and possession of stolen property “.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Police Commissioner Major General Thulani Gonya said he was happy that the suspected scammer was arrested and Sassa’s cards seized.
“It is heartbreaking to know that there are people who are robbing our citizens who are eagerly awaiting their money, but are only disappointed when they are not being paid money into their accounts,” Gonya added.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure that everyone involved comes forward.”
