Nelspruit – Police injured two suspected thieves during a shooting that followed a robbery at a cell phone store over the weekend.
Four other men who were part of the gang fled during the chaos and remain at large. No police officers were injured in the shooting.
According to Colonel Donald Mdhluli of the Mpumalanga Police, the incident occurred in Sabie around 4 a.m. on Saturday.
Mdhluli said police were alerted to a business robbery in which about six suspects broke into a cell phone store.
He said police rushed to the place where they found the suspects still inside the store.
“The suspects started shooting at them but they (the police) defended themselves and wounded two of the suspects, who were later arrested. The other four escaped.
“The arrested suspects were found in possession of two firearms and ammunition, as well as cell phones believed to have been stolen during the robbery.
“Two counts of attempted murder are being investigated with additional charges, including theft, possession of firearms and ammunition without a license, as well as possession of allegedly stolen property,” Mdhluli said.
He said police had started a search for the other suspects and asked anyone with information to contact Police Detective Gladwell Mavanga at 082 653 5012 or to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 1011.
“Alternatively, you can give a notice in MySAPSApp that can be downloaded to any smartphone. All information will be treated confidentially and callers can choose to remain anonymous, ”he said.
