Johannesburg – Metro police arrested a liquor store owner after he allegedly tried to bribe the police with R40,000 after being arrested for illegally selling alcohol.
The JMPD said this came after subway police stopped two vehicles that were found laden with alcohol.
“The occupants were questioned and the officers were taken to a liquor store on Fox Street between Hans and Gus Streets in Jeppestown, where they had purchased the alcohol,” said JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla.
Police found vehicles lined up, apparently waiting to buy alcohol at the store.
“All those vehicles left the scene. Officers approached the manager and told him what had happened. The manager called his son. When the son arrived, he offered SAPS Tactical Reaction members a bribe of R40,000. They were both immediately arrested, ”said Fihla.
This comes as the provincial government and metropolitan areas in the province are working with legal agencies to enforce closure regulations, including through roadblocks and stop-and-search operations across the province.
Under the adjusted level 3 closure regulations, the sale, distribution and transportation of alcohol is prohibited.
Fihla said the JMPD also confiscated alcohol from the establishment and arrested those caught for purchasing it.
The value of alcohol is estimated to be around one million rand.
“Five suspects were arrested and detained at Jeppe SAPS. Four suspects were arrested for violating the Disaster Management Act by selling, dispensing and transporting liquor, ”said Fihla.
While other suspects face a charge of R3,000 for transporting liquor in violation of the Disaster Management Act, the owner of the establishment will face a number of charges, including bribery.
