- Since the resumption of the Absa Premiership after a breakdown imposed by the coronavirus, the title race has taken a strange course.
- Shaky leaders Kaizer Chiefs are only 13th best in games since the restart.
- Surprisingly, the other title contenders and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns have also failed.
It seemed to contain all the trimmings of a “believe it or not” saga, as Absa’s Premiership title race took a strange course with shaky headlines. Kaizer bosses only the thirteenth best team in matches since the resumption of the coronavirus pandemic outbreak.
And on top of the disbelief heading into the final two rounds of games this week, there’s the way defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were finally presented with the glorious opportunity to overtake the Amakhosi after a long season of waiting, only to surrender what seemed like an opportunity at a plate with a dismal display in a 1-0 loss to relegation contenders Baroka FC after the Chiefs fell in a late loss to Bidvest Wits.
Almost like a fan, it seems, the Sundowns appeared to take the field against a Baroka fighting as if they had indeed been crowned PSL champions for the third season in a row and had paid the penalty of overlooking the fact that a game starts in the opening minute. and not when a crisis arises.
Now, with the Chiefs continuing to shade the Brazilians with a neat five-goal goal difference, with the top two teams tied on points, skeptics are suggesting from Amakhosi’s most recent background playing six games, winning one, drawing two. and losing three. and Sundowns isn’t much more impressive in seven games, with two wins, three draws and two losses, almost “anything can happen.”
The Chiefs will face Chippa and Baroka FC in their last two games and the Sundowns will play Polokwane City and Black Leopards.
Mathematically, Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United could still defy the 5,000-to-one odds and snatch the PSL title, but even in the fantasy climate this can be written off as virtually impossible.
Instead, the Chiefs, for their first major title in five seasons, or the Sundowns, for a third consecutive PSL honor, will emerge as the less-than-impressive champions of the extended 2019/20 season in what can be interpreted as just one name.
