There was a sudden interest from foreign clubs in South African players and stems from a 21 day window that was agreed by SA Rugby Industry, MyPlayers and the South African Organization of Rugby Employers (Sareo) last month in which all players professionals were given three weeks – until may 14 (midnight tonight) – to break out of their current contracts with their respective unions and sign on the dotted line with those high-spending clubs in the UK, France, and Japan in particular.
The window coincides with SA Rugby’s efforts to cut costs as the economic impact of the global coronavirus crisis worsens.
Wiese’s case is further complicated by the fact that he had been strongly linked to another English club, the Saracens.
It is understood that an agreement was reached between the Saracens and Wiese before their relegation from the English Premier League, but that the player has been able to use the relegation as a way to get out of his agreement with them.
Wiese, 22, who operates primarily as a lazy striker but can also play lock, is considered one of the Stormers’ brightest youngsters.
