Stormers coach John dobson praises heaped on half the lions fly Elton jantjies after teams Super Rugby Unlocked meeting in Newlands for the weekend.
The Stormers won the contest 23-17, but they had largely fallen behind and Dobson was not happy with their effort.
Jantjies, the Lions captain, caused the Capetonians all sorts of problems at all times, and his cross kicks often caught the Stormers off guard.
“Individually there were some poor performances. The guys haven’t played a lot of rugby. From a technical point of view we won the battle for territory really well, but how we did it really worried me,” Dobson told reporters afterward.
Dobson said he was not satisfied with his team’s tactical kicks.
“Sometimes towards that second half, we were kicking through the middle of the field with some kicks that were not disputable in the distance.
“Elton Jantjies produced one of the most outstanding performances I’ve seen so far. We asked a lot of guys to defend that and it almost became a training exercise the way we keep moving through the middle of the field.”
Coach of the lions Ivan van Rooyen he says it was a game that got out of hand, having led 10-6 at halftime.
“I think we were good in the first 40 minutes and we managed to put them under a lot of pressure. The only thing we lacked was the opportunities to convert into points, be it three, five or seven. We definitely had less pressure on them in attack.
“We knew they would come out fighting in the first 20 minutes after halftime. One or two moments were against us and that was the difference in the game,” Van Rooyen said.
