Thousands of motorcyclists from across the country gathered outside Union Buildings, calling for an end to farm killings, gender-based violence and racism on Saturday.
Without any permission from the authorities, the ‘Stop Farm Killing’ movement went ahead with its demonstration, in which crosses and flowers were placed on the doors of Union buildings.
“We need to move forward with the rainbow nation and unite against these crimes,” said organizer Tommie Blignaut.
Blignaut said he was proud of the riders who managed to run the event in an organized manner. He said the event, which was attended by people from Mpumalanga, Free State, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape, was a great success.
“This is what happens when we hold hands and do something productive. “Our voices have certainly been heard.” The group also called for the death penalty to be reinstated against those guilty of killing farmers.
Protester Roger Ellis drove from Kempton Park to put up a cross at Union Buildings as a way to get his message out.
“We are here to support a very valuable course aimed at preserving the lives of our farmers,” he said.
“The authorities treat farm killings as normal killings. We need them to be classified separately. “There is a specific focus on farmers and it must stop. All lives matter. “Another protester, Vania Nortje, said the farmers had no one speaking for them as they faced death on a daily basis.” I do not agree with the death penalty. I am not god.
But I do believe that it is necessary to protect our farmers. “More can be done to prevent violence against them.” A prayer session was held in which the cyclists asked for God’s help to end the farm killings.
The protesters also called for an end to racism. Blignaut said another protest was planned for Sept. 5 in which motorists would participate.
