A 65-year-old man was stabbed to death during a home invasion in Stilbaai, in the Western Cape.
His 61-year-old wife had her hands tied behind her back and locked in a bedroom.
According to police, three unknown suspects attacked the couple at their home shortly after midnight Tuesday.
“Preliminary information indicates that three unknown suspects armed with a firearm and sharp objects (knife and screwdriver) entered the residence on Melkboom Street through a window, the glass of which had been removed,” said police spokesman, the Captain Malcolm Potjie.
Asleep
He said the men then attacked the couple, who were sleeping in their room.
“During the attack, they stabbed 65-year-old Johan Ungerer in the neck, tied the hands of his wife Christina behind his back and locked her in a bedroom,” he added.
The suspects demanded cash and then fled the scene in the deceased’s white Chevrolet LDV.
Later, the police managed to recover the car on a farm near the N2, between Stilbaai and Riversdale.
Potjie said the suspects left with an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables, including two cell phones, a laptop and jewelry.
The suspects were still at large and were considered to be armed and dangerous.
