Steven Gerrard was shattered by Liverpool’s relentless new record, and it’s not over yet

When you refer to the term ‘Liverpool legend’, each and every person will have a handful of different players that come to mind.

You can’t discuss such a topic without talking about people like Sir Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Ray Clemence, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher. The list goes on, and there are definitely many others that deserve a mention.

With the current group of players at Anfield, almost everyone is signing up for Anfield folklore. Being part of the team that won the Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup and Premier League already ensures it, but for some they are doing it even more.

There are many players who deserve individual recognition, but right now we are going to talk about Mohamed Salah.

Following his double in the weekend’s 7-0 win at Crystal Palace, that brings him to 16 goals in all competitions this season and 110 in total in the Liverpool jersey. Given that he has only played 173 games for the club, that’s a remarkable statistic.

The most interesting are his goals in the Premier League, or in the highest category if you prefer, which currently amount to 86 in 121 games. To put that in perspective, he is eighth on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list in the English top flight.

Only Ian Rush (230), Roger Hunt (168), Robbie Fowler (128), Gerrard (120), Dalglish (118), Michael Owen (118) and Billy Liddell have more than the Egyptian. And when you consider that Salah has played considerably fewer games than all of them, that only makes his achievement even more impressive.

But if there’s one thing you can be sure of about Salah, it’s that he will never stop trying to be the best. After breaking Gerrard’s record for most Champions League goals for Liverpool, that was just another on the list that has passed during his time at Anfield.

We really could be lucky enough to see one of the best players to ever represent Liverpool. While hitting Rush’s record in the top flight may be a long way off, there is certainly a chance that Salah will catch Gerrard or even Fowler in qualifying.

Salah currently averages 0.71 goals every 90 minutes, considerably more than any of the other former Reds. With the Egyptian signed until 2023, there is still the possibility of two and a half more seasons to enjoy his quality at Anfield.

We don’t know how long Salah plans to remain a Liverpool player, but he would like to think that he would do so until the moment his current contract expires. If that’s the case, it is more than likely that he will play at least another 100 games for the club before his departure.

We are truly witnessing greatness in front of our eyes. Salah is set to become one of the best players in the club, and if he continues with his scoring, he is likely to surpass some of the best names to ever play at Anfield.
