The Zondo commission has reportedly expanded its investigation into the state capture to include EFF leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu, according to a Sunday Times report.
The report claims that the commission has issued subpoenas to South Africa’s leading banks to provide information on more than 36 entities. These include Malema’s financial records and those of his wife, Mantoa; his late grandmother, Sarah; his attorney, Ian Levitt; his Ratanang Family Trust, as well as a number of companies linked to it.
Allegedly included on the list are Shivambu, his brother, Brian, and Brian’s companies, which allegedly profited illegally from VBS Mutual Bank’s R2.3 billion heist.
Investigators are reportedly studying bank records after whistleblowers provided information. The investigation is reportedly related to various state contracts.
According to the report, the banks had complied and investigators were now analyzing the bank records.
Until now, there were no indications that Malema, Shivambu, their families and associates were the subject of the state’s capture investigation.
Malema told the Sunday Times that he was not aware of any subpoenas for his bank records or those of his wife and grandmother.
Levitt also reportedly said he was unaware of the subpoenas relating to his accounts.
Last week, the Sunday Times reported that it had seen subpoenas related to at least 20 accounts linked to the family of former President Jacob Zuma, including a television producer, belonging to one of Zuma’s daughters, Gugulethu Zuma-Ncube, who produces the soap opera SABC1. Birth.
Lashed out
In a statement issued Friday, Zuma lashed out at the commission for the interest reported on his children’s bank accounts. Zuma appealed to the commission and law enforcement agencies to keep his children out of their investigations. He added that while he accepted that the commission was “desperate” to hold him accountable in its state capture investigation, it condemned the attempts to attack his children through “clandestine investigations” in matters with which they had nothing to do.
However, the Zondo commission spokesperson, the Rev. Mbuyiselo Stemela, would not be swayed by the scandal, News24 previously reported.
“The commission has nothing to say about the former president’s statement on the bank accounts of the latter’s children. If there is anything to say, it will be reported to the media,” he said Saturday.
