In a statement, Eskom said the power system was severely restricted after 10 generating units at seven power plants broke down in the last 48 hours.

Eskom lost one unit at each of the Arnot, Medupi, Lethabo and Matla power plants, while two units at the Majuba, Camden and Tutuka power plants failed.

The struggling power provider warned that any further deterioration in generation performance could lead to increased load shedding in the short term, adding that the restricted power system is likely to persist for the rest of the week.
