Stage 2 cargo shedding tonight

Eskom has announced that it will implement Stage 2 load shedding from 10:00 p.m. tonight, December 29, until 5:00 a.m. tomorrow.

This will be repeated the following night, Wednesday, December 30, and is an attempt by Eskom to prepare for the increased demand expected in January.

“The load reduction is necessary to preserve emergency generation reserves in preparation for the increased demand expected during January as economic activity resumes,” Eskom said.

“During this period, Eskom will continue to seek further maintenance of reliability as previously planned and communicated.”

The national power provider said it currently has 9,745MW unavailable due to planned maintenance, with an additional 11,346MW capacity unavailable due to unplanned maintenance.

“Eskom teams are working around the clock to bring as many of these units back into service as soon as possible,” Eskom said.

“Eskom will communicate in time in the event of major changes to the electrical system.”

The national energy provider called for South Africans to use electricity sparingly so that the impact of the load reduction is limited.
