Springbok flank Pieter-Steph du Toit is among eight nominees for the World Rugby Men’s 15th Player of the Decade award.
Voting for the Special Edition of the World Rugby Awards is now open, giving fans around the world a chance to weigh in on who should walk away with six awards on December 7.
Due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on the global game, it was announced last month that the usual 12 World Rugby awards would not be awarded this year.
Instead, a special edition of the World Rugby Awards will celebrate members of the rugby family who have provided incredible service to the public during the Covid-19 pandemic and the players and teams who have stood out over the last decade.
Fans have until October 25 to vote in the following categories, which will be decided by the public:
- Male player of the 15s
- Player from the 15s, women
- International Rugby Players 15 Years Try of the Decade
- International rugby players, 15 year old women, attempt of the decade
- Male Sevens Player of the Decade
- Seven of the Decade Player
While fans will select the winners from these six categories, the task of selecting a 15-man Team of the Decade and a 15-woman Team of the Decade falls to the World Rugby Awards panel, a stellar team of greats from the world. rugby players historically chosen by the World Rugby Awards winners.
The special edition of the World Rugby Awards will be co-sponsored by former England international and Maggie Alphonsi, inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame and rugby host Alex Payne on Monday, December 7. The show will be available free of charge to rugby fans worldwide through World Rugby digital channels.
Every World Rugby Men’s Player 15 of the Year since 2010, including three-time winners Dan Carter and Richie McCaw and 2019 winner Pieter-Steph du Toit, have been shortlisted for the Men’s 15th Player of the Decade.
Meanwhile, Springboks Bryan Habana and Francois Hougaard compete for the 15s Try of the Decade of International Rugby Players (IRP). Other nominees for the award include Chris Ashton, Radike Samo, Beauden Barrett, Julian Savea, Jamie Heaslip, Joaquín Tuculet, Brodie Retallick and TJ Perenara.
There are three former Blitzboks who have been nominated for Player of the Decade Seven. Cecil Afrika, Werner Kok and Seabelo Senatla will face Perry Baker, Mikaele Pesamino, Tomasi Cama, Tim Mikkelson, Samisoni Viriviri and Jerry Tuwai for the award.
